The Great American State Fair: Freedom 250 on the Mall

A 16-day America 250 celebration on the National Mall, June 25 to July 10, 2026, organized by Freedom 250. What it is, who's involved, and the controversies surrounding it.

What it is

The Great American State Fair is a 16-day celebration of America's 250th anniversary scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10, 2026 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The fair is organized by Freedom 250, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit also responsible for the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House.

Newsweek described the fair: "Organizers describe it as a World's Fair-style gathering bringing together representatives from all U.S. states and territories. The event is set to include concerts, cultural displays, military demonstrations and educational programming stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument. Admission will be free."

The scope

Per organizer announcements covered by FOX 5 DC and The Hill, planned features include:

150+ state and territory exhibits. Organizers extended invitations to all 56 U.S. states and territories.

A 110-foot Ferris wheel. A signature visual element.

The newly refurbished Smithsonian National Carousel.

Military programming. U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, Army Downrange Rock, Air Force Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble, Commanders-in-Chief's Guard.

Movie screenings. Including National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Music performances. A planned multi-genre lineup, though see artist withdrawals.

Who runs Freedom 250

Freedom 250 CEO is Keith Krach, a former undersecretary of state during the first Trump administration. The organization describes itself as "a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) dedicated to uniting Americans around the nation's 250th anniversary."

Multiple major events run under the Freedom 250 brand: the State Fair, the FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Zone, the Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks on July 4, the Patriot Games national fitness competition in August, and the UFC Freedom 250 event in June. See Freedom 250 vs America 250 for how the brand differs from the official Semiquincentennial Commission programming.

The controversies in summary

Three major controversies have shaped pre-event coverage:

Multiple artists withdrew from the music lineup. Within hours of the initial announcement, performers including Morris Day and The Time, Young MC, The Commodores, Martina McBride, Milli Vanilli (members), C+C Music Factory, and others publicly declined to perform. See our artists article.

Multiple states opted out. At least eight states — Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Maine, Oregon, Washington, and Pennsylvania — declined to send state delegations to the fair. See our states article.

Trump suggested canceling the music. After the artist withdrawals, Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting the planned concerts be canceled and replaced with a "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY."

The official organizer response

Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner told multiple outlets, including The Hill and Newsweek: "Freedom 250 is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) dedicated to uniting Americans around the nation's 250th anniversary. Freedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans — welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America."

Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez separately told NBC News that Trump would "personally kick off this historic celebration" on June 24 — the day before the fair opens.

The current state going into opening day

As of late June 2026, the fair is set to proceed as planned. Some states that opted out are still being represented through private sponsors — for example, Carolina Journal reported that Richard Childress Racing, SPEVCO, and a nonprofit organization stepped up to represent North Carolina despite the official state declining.

The fair's actual reception will be evident only after opening day on June 25, 2026.
